The Confidentiality Gap: Why Therapy Protects You—But ChatGPT Can’t (Yet)
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has cautioned that conversations with ChatGPT do not have the same legal confidentiality protections as discussions with therapists, doctors, or lawyers. He emphasized that while many users, especially young people, treat ChatGPT as a therapist or life coach and share deeply personal issues, these chats lack legal privilege and could be subpoenaed and used as evidence in court proceedings if required. Altman called this a major privacy gap.
