Some rooms ask you to perform. This one asks you to stay.

Kitabi Angan — Bodakdev, Ahmedabad

Kitabi Angan is a independent bookstore and coffee house off Sindhu Bhawan Road, built by Bansari Kamdar around a simple idea: a place where you don't have to prove anything to belong. There's no pressure to be the smartest person in the room or to have all the right takes - you can show up, listen, disagree, learn something, or just exist in the space and take it in. The lighting is soft, the corners are quiet, and nobody is counting how long you've nursed your chai.

What earns it a place in the Circle is what happens between the shelves. There are writing clubs where bad first drafts are the whole point, book clubs that feel like a group chat you actually want to be in, and a programme designed to make talking to strangers feel less like a social ordeal. It is also, at present, the only bookstore in India hosting a feminist literature festival - though you can come for none of that and still get what the place offers: a few unhurried hours, a mezzanine reading nook, a masala chai people are oddly devoted to, and the particular comfort of being alone in good company.

If you're between things - sessions, seasons, versions of yourself - this is a gentle place to land.

Find it: Zion Z1, Sindhu Bhawan Road, Bodakdev. Open every day, late.
